Winter scout camp

Unforeseen events prevented the Scouts from reaching out previous backcountry camping area at camp Wannakumbac this year. Snow conditions were deep, granular snow which made hiking difficult, even with snowshoes.
Since there was no trail cut for us, we had little choice but to set up camp by the cabins. Friday night was spent building quinzees and working on collecting firewood. Something which we would have had to do at our backcountry site excepted had no alternative shelter for sleeping Friday night. So we opted to spend the night inside with the Venturers.
Saturday was spend digging out our quinzees, melting snow for drinking water, cooking in the fire and gathering enough fire wood to last the remainder of the weekend.
The weather was sunny throughout the day. The sun's rays were noticeable and helped to keep the moral up. Wind was forecasted for the evening and with the drop in the mercury after the sun set, campfire was moved inside the gymnasium.
The Scouts did an good job in keeping the campfire moving. They lead the opening and closing.
However, with the temperatures bottoming out near minus 28, we decided to pull the plug on a night outside. We everyone except the "fearless leader". Maybe crazy is a better word to use.
